Embassy of Zambia Delegation Visited Shanghai Dashunkang for Hospital Construction Solutions

How to sustain advantages in the industry of medical technology? Shanghai Dashunkang Medical Technology (DSC) believes altruism is a key. During 19-22 July, DSC organised a series of tours for the delegates from the Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in China to learn of DSC’s sophisticated production lines, innovative technologies, and high-grade products.

The delegation visited four central departments of DSC, namely: DSC Jiangsu Ultrasound Production Centre, DSC Jiangsu X-Ray Production Centre, DSC Shanghai Head Office, and DSC Jiangxi Healthcare Furniture Factory.

Counsellor Health, Muzaza A.M. Nthele, concluded their visits with generous appreciation. He thanked DSC for offering Zambia ‘valuable insights into hospital construction’.

Meanwhile, accompanied by DSC CEO Yunqiu Tu and other staff, the delegation enjoyed spectacular sceneries, cuisines, and historical delights in several cities. The two sides established sincere friendships after the trip, and they both suggested future business and communication would be most welcome.

Lights at canal and newborns in darkness

DSC staff picked up the Zambia delegation at night on 19 July in Wuxi, Jiangsu and settled them in a hotel beside the grand canal running across the bustling city.

Seeing the canal ablaze with red lanterns, Chola Musonda, First Secretary for Commerce, was impressed. The lights reminded him of Zambian newborns delivered in darkness.

‘Zambia does not have stable electricity, and there is even no electricity in some areas’, said Chola, ‘as a result, doctors often deliver babies in darkness, lit with few candles’.

Chola’s words deeply touched our staff and raised their sense of obligation. As the chat continued, he mentioned more unsettling facts about the Zambia healthcare system — the lack of hospitals, basic supplies, workforces, and funds.

Regarding these facts, DSC managed to offer the most economical plan for Zambia to procure and deploy medical resources. Besides, it proposed multiple solutions for Zambia to build its own factories.

The insistence on innovation

As a mature manufacturer and distributor of medical devices, DSC insists on innovation. The benefit of such insistence manifested itself in the visit to DSC Jiangsu Ultrasound Production Centre on 20 July.

‘It is unexpected for us that electricity is Zambia’s utmost challenge’, said Chen, the centre manager. ‘But we have ongoing research into portable machines, and some of them can last 24hr with internal lithium batteries’, Chen added.

Besides, Chen proudly announced the centre ‘has been designing new models using solar energy’, and some prototypes were successfully installed in some hospitals in Inner Mongolia, where energy supply is also of significant concern.

The delegation was excited about the possibility of handling their electricity shortage, with DSC’s suggestions of internal lithium batteries and solar energy.

Dr Muzaza expressed: ‘We come with an unforeseeable problem, but you (DSC) readily have all answers’. The delegation agreed that DSC exhibited high-degree expertise, hardly attainable without years of accumulation.

Indeed, DSC Jiangsu Ultrasound Production Centre has been dedicated to Ultrasound R&D and manufacture for 20 years. The centre is renowned for its IUCD (Intrauterine Ultrasound Guidance System) technology, featured in multiple DSC models popular in domestic and international markets.

Eliminate your what-ifs

While amazed by DSC’s innovative technologies, the delegation raised several questions: what if their workers are unsure about the machine installation; what if their practitioners fail to operate machines and interpret their results? These questions were addressed at DSC Jiangsu X-Ray Production Centre on 21 July.

‘We believe no issue should be kept vague’, DSC CEO Yunqiu Tu expressed. He added that: ‘on the one hand, DSC guarantees the quality and simplicity of products to reduce potential malfunctions and difficulties; one the other hand, we have explicit procedures for handling all after-sales scenarios’.

The production lines at DSC Jiangsu X-Ray Production Centre are perfect examples of DSC quality. The centre owns advanced automation systems and experienced teams. Its production model has been replicated by many other companies, and trusted by some industrial giants.

‘The factory is so well-organised, and your (DSC’s) excellent products are beyond my imagination’, said First Secretary Trade Justus Phiri. Meanwhile, Justus suggested that most DSC models appear simple enough after trying them, although he had little related knowledge.

According to the product manager Chen, DSC models feature unique intelligence that guides users through complex procedures and offers automatic adjustments, such as Mobile C Arm X-Ray Unit. ‘Our devices are accessible to operators of varying proficiency’, said Chen.

On the following day, Tu met the delegation at DSC Shanghai Head office. The two sides discussed after-sales issues and Tu promised that DSC held full responsibility for equipment installation, maintenance, and training. ‘We could go to Zambia if needed’, said Tu.

These promises dispelled all doubts the delegation once had. In great delight, the delegation explored other DSC products and was caught by our General Diagnosis System. The system integrates multiple monitors for detecting comprehensive health indices, while data are stored digitally and allow remote access by experts from other hospitals. ‘The device is an ideal solution for the uneven distribution of medical professionals in Zambia’, according to Dr Muzaza.

Quality or price? DSC refuses such a trade-off

‘I really appreciate your food and accommodation these days, but meanwhile I can’t help think of my people — you know, we are very poor’. Emotionally, Muzaza spoke of his recent experience with our staff.

Despite ambitions of improving Zambian healthcare systems, the delegation confessed that they has faced uncertainties of funds.

Instead of a disincentive, DSC read this as a challenge. With the ethos of altruism, our staff managed to provide the most cost-effective plan.

On 22 July, DSC invited the delegation to visit its Healthcare Furniture Factory in Jiangxi, one that supplies extensive items for major hospitals at fair prices, without compromising quality in the least.

‘The secrect of our cheap price is that DSC handles every step, from raw materials to final products’, explained Xiong, the factory manager. ‘Without middlemen, our cost can be reduced to the lowest , while quality is safeguarded at each stage’, he added.

Inspired by DSC’s self-contained manufacturing, the delegation wondered if Zambia could have similar factories. In response, DSC opened all of its production lines and introduced them in detail, of which some are usually kept secret.

‘We are businessmen and altruists’, said Tu, ‘it is our pleasure to share knowledge — after all, knowledge is the best charity’. Moreover, Tu suggested that cooperating with Zambia echoed the Belt and Road Initiative, to which ‘any responsible enterprises should find themselves relevant’.

All trips ended on 23 July. The delegates farewelled our staff with appreciation. ‘We have some directions now’, Muzaza told DSC. But the story does not end here. According to DSC E-Commerce Department, negotiations have continued for concrete settlements between DSC and the Zambia government.
